Guemes Island: This unspoiled San Juan island is a laid-back retreat
By GREG JOHNSTON
P-I REPORTER
GUEMES ISLAND -- For a few bucks, you can catch a five-minute ferry ride 30 years back in time, to an island where most people wave at everyone they pass, where you can wander the beach without treading on anyone's personal space, or ride your bicycle and draw smiles instead of frowns from motorists.
Guemes Island is one of the least known of the inhabited San Juan Islands, a great place to go if you are, say, a fugitive from technology or want to isolate yourself from the race-pace of civilization.
Ferry info: Check out before 11 a.m. to get back to the ferry
terminal for the 11:23 return to Anacortes. You'll be back in Seattle
by 1 p.m. and still have a whole afternoon to sort through pictures and
mentally prepare for another week at work.
Cost: Round-trip ferry fee (car and driver, plus one passenger): $9
Cabins from $125 per night, yurts from $55 per night, dog fee of $10 per night
Winter was ... busy. My boyfriend and I had just moved in together; our
main hobby, acting as referees for the Rat City Rollergirls, was
gearing up for another long season; and I was spending a lot of
physical and mental energy preparing for Trip's March debut.
I was usually tired and stressed at home, and my boyfriend was the one
who had to face that every night. We needed to get away and have some
"us" time before summer brought another wave of booked weekends.
